Action for Brain Injury (ABI) Week 2018 – organised by the leading brain injury charity, Headway – takes place 14 – 20 May. The aim of the latest campaign – You, me, and brain injury – is to increase understanding of the effects of brain injury.
According to a study conducted by Headway, around three quarters (74%) of brain injury survivors feel like a new person following their injury. Therefore, an entire week in May is dedicated to highlighting the ripple effect a brain injury can have on many different lives, in many different ways. The aim is to look for people, from many different perspectives, to share their experiences – positive and negative – about how their relationships have changed following brain injury.
ABI week focuses on demonstrating the various ways in which people can help the person with the brain injury to adapt and regain a degree of confidence and independence. This is crucial as 56% of respondents reported their brain injury had a negative impact on family life, with 60% of people feeling that their friends did not understand their injury. It is hoped the findings will help to increase understanding of brain injury among the public, as well as health and social care professionals.
