The End of Dyslexia?
27th October 2014
In their recent book ‘The Dyslexia Debate’ Julian G. Elliot and Elena L. Grigorenko argue that dyslexia is no longer a useful label to ascribe to those who experience difficulties with reading.
They point out in a recent article in ‘The Psychologist’ that many have acknowledged that the term dyslexia is not necessarily a suitable term to describe the varying difficulties that people can experience with reading and writing. Elliot and Grigorenko feel however, that the reason the term has stuck round is that it is a useful label that it serves to highlight the problems many individuals can encounter and, as a result gathers public support.
‘The Dyslexia Debate’ ends by calling for an end to the use of the label dyslexia and instead advocates for children who experience problems with reading and writing to be offered more individually tailored support that addresses their own particular difficulties.
