Is there a link between the use of digital technology and empathy?

Baroness Greenfield is a senior research fellow in pharmacology at the University of Oxford. In this recent article Baroness Greenfield alludes to an ever dominant and developing era of digital technology which she argues may contain both good and bad qualities when assessing its impact on the functioning of human beings. Furthermore, she raises considerations for areas of future research which serve to investigate the influence of the cyber-world of the 21st century on particular domains of human interaction such as empathy and tendencies to engage in reckless behavior.
Could “sustained and often obsessive game-playing” consequentially be impacting on how our brains interact with our environment?
