Mindfulness is something most people will have heard of in some form or another these days. Over the past few years, it has become a bit of a ‘buzzword’ in both mental and physical health settings but what is mindfulness? What’s it for?

What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a form of meditation. In short, it involves ‘Paying attention, on purpose, in the moment’. Historically aligned to Buddhism, mindfulness aims to teach us all how to live more in the present moment, be in touch with our thoughts and feelings as they occur. Have you ever driven a familiar route only to arrive at your destination with no real memory of the journey? Ever been eating a meal only to look down and realised you’ve finished the plate without realising it? These are both examples of just ‘doing’, of being in autopilot where our minds are busy raking over the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness aims to teach us how to spend more time in the present just simply ‘being’ and observing thoughts and feelings in the moment without judgement or over analysis.

Mindfulness can be effective in helping people manage a range of psychological and physical issues including depression, anxiety, chronic pain and sleep problems.

Mindfulness is not a concept that can necessarily be learned intellectually. To get the most from mindfulness it is best to experience it yourself. The benefits of attending classes or courses also include being able to share and reflect on experiences with others. If you are interested in finding out more about mindfulness Psychology Chartered are running group drop in sessions every Monday morning from 10-11am at our office in Widley. The groups are for anyone, regardless of experience and aim to provide a supportive and friendly space to practice, reflect and learn.
