Psychology Chartered leads research into mindfulness treatment for stroke
24th April 2013
Psychology Chartered are in partnership with a postgraduate research project at Bath Spa University, to conduct an innovative study exploring the impact of mindfulness for Stroke patients.
There is growing evidence to support the effectiveness of mindfulness across a wide range of clinical conditions including chronic pain to depression.
150,000 people have a stroke in the UK each year, 10,000 of whom are working age. A stroke can affect an individual’s physical, emotional, cognitive functioning and subsequently cause psychological difficulties including depression and anxiety. Psychology Chartered are studying whether stroke patients can effectively use mindfulness and how it might benefit their psychological adjustment to loss, disability and life change.
After designing and delivering a recent 8 week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy group for stroke patients, Psychology Chartered are in the progress of publishing the findings. This will guide future research and contribute to our understanding regarding the role of psychological treatments in supporting adjustment and improving clinical outcomes.
Further details regarding this project will be posted on our website. If you would like to discuss please contact Dr Richard Maddicks, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist or Juanita Merriman, Assistant Psychologist at office@psychologychartered.co.uk.
