29th April 2015

Effective Stress Management for Support Workers and Carers – June 24th 9.30-4pm.  Wells Place, Eastleigh.

Facilitators: Dr Sarah Walker-Bircham, Clinical Psychologist

Charlotte McWilliam, Assistant Psychologist

Caring for others, whether in a professional or personal capacity can be one of the most stressful and challenging roles we take on. Support workers and carers often look after others at the detriment to themselves.  By not acknowledging the impact stress from work or other areas of our lives has on us we put ourselves at risk of developing emotional, physical and psychological problems.

Stress Management for Support Workers and Carers aims to provide those in caring role with the knowledge, insight and strategies to better manage stress and improve general wellbeing. By developing a better understanding of how stress affects us, both physically and psychologically we hope that delegates are able to develop skills and strategies to better manage stress both in and out of their caring responsibilities. The day will include practical and interactive examples of mindfulness meditation and how mindfulness can be used to enhance wellbeing and manage stress when caring for others.

Delivered by a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Psychologist, this training day is an opportunity for support workers and carers to work together to learn and practice a number of strategies and techniques including:

  • Identifying causes and triggers for stress
  • Recognizing the importance of prevention and early intervention
  • Developing a greater understanding of Cognitive Behavioural approaches to stress and stress management
  • Compassion focused interventions including mindfulness
  • Progressive muscle relaxation techniques
  • Identifying and overcoming obstacles to managing stress effectively
  • Carer/support worker specific illustrations of stress management strategies

This will be an interactive day where delegates will be encouraged to engage with practical mindfulness and relaxation exercises. There will also be opportunity for delegates to develop their own Stress Relapse Prevention Plan to use in the future.
